Bardou

Bardou

Bardou lies in the Parc Naturel du Haut Languedoc in the mountains near Montpellier in Southern France and is our special destination for those who appreciate the essentials of life. The accommodation is rustic but you will be rewarded with a unique setting of stunning scenery and tranquility. Consisting of twenty ancient stone houses, Bardou is an authentic example of the architecture and layout of a tiny medieval mountain hamlet.

Bardou is the perfect place for enjoying nature. Several marked trails offer short- or long-distance walks for all levels. You might also enjoy swimming in the refreshing waters of mountain streams with waterfalls and secluded deep rock pools.

WITH A CHARITY CONCERT on 26th May 2018 in Villemagne l’Argentière the first spring edition of the Sinfonietta Bardou has successfully ended. Under the musical direction of Frédéric Tschumi, a group of keen string amateur musicians spent a lovely week in Bardou and experienced an intensive musical retreat combined with recreation in the beautiful nature of the Parc Naturel du Haut Languedoc. We played a programme with MOZART Adagio and Fugue, ELGAR Elegy and Serenade, and WARLOCK Capriol Suite.

Due to the efforts of the participants to this orchestra, we could collect during the concert 420,- € to support the music school and youth orchestra of Balanyá, a village in the highlands of Guatemala (learn more). Also in 2019 we will keep this tradition and try to help the children in Balanyá with our final concert in May.

The next Symphonic Holiday for string orchestra in Bardou will take place from 18th – 26th May 2019. We are happy that Frédéric will again conduct the orchestra.

On Facebook we published a photo album with impressions of the Symphonic Holiday in Bardou May 2018.

RAVEL, Le Tombeau de Couperin
SAINT-SAËNS, Cello Concerto No. 1
FARRENC, Symphony No. 3

DISCOVERY TOUR: The 19th-century French composer Louise Farrenc had remarkable success at her times with her 3rd Symphony, written in 1847, and is now about to be rediscovered and listed on the concert programmes of well known orchestras. A rich and colourful symphony comparable to the works of Farrenc’s contemporary colleagues Mendelssohn and Schumann. For Farrenc, the ideals were clarity of thought and structure, compression and concision of expressive power, and the creation of a genuinely symphonic momentum.

Louise Farrenc also was a famous Professor of Piano – and as such an early fighter for equal pay! – at the Paris Conservatory and therefor most probably her paths crossed those of Camille Saint-Saëns who studied piano at the same place and time. Much later in1872 at the age of 37 he writes his Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor. Here, for once, is a violoncello concerto in which the solo instrument displays every register without the slightest difficulty in penetrating the orchestra. The soloist is kept in the dramatic and musical foreground, the orchestra offering a shimmering backdrop. The music is tremendously demanding for soloists, especially in the fast third section.

The youngest of the three French compositions assembled in this programme is Maurice Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin. “The dead are sad enough in their eternal silence.” This was Ravel’s explanation of the almost childlike world of colour and joyful, elegant ambivalence of this work written between 1914 and 1917 and dedicated to the memory of friends lost on the battlefield. With Le Tombeau (meaning tomb / memorial) de Couperin Ravel also intended to pay homage to Couperin and the style and ambiance of eighteenth century French keyboard suites (Ravel orchestrated the suite only later). The movements are based on popular Baroque dances.
