Bardou

Bardou

Bardou lies in the Parc Naturel du Haut Languedoc in the mountains near Montpellier in Southern France and is our special destination for those who appreciate the essentials of life. The accommodation is rustic but you will be rewarded with a unique setting of stunning scenery and tranquility. Consisting of twenty ancient stone houses, Bardou is an authentic example of the architecture and layout of a tiny medieval mountain hamlet.

Bardou is the perfect place for enjoying nature. Several marked trails offer short- or long-distance walks for all levels. You might also enjoy swimming in the refreshing waters of mountain streams with waterfalls and secluded deep rock pools.

MOZART, Adagio and Fugue
ELGAR, Elegy
ELGAR, Serenade for Strings

WARLOCK, Capriol Suite

A PROGRAMME DEDICATED to the strings and aimed at carefully shaping the pure sound of the instruments of the violin family. The ground is laid with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Adagio and Fugue, a music strongly influenced by studies of Bach’s scores that Mozart found in the library of his friend and sponsor Baron van Swieten. The Adagio is filled with bold, expressive harmonic progressions. The Fugue, once set in motion, rolls on relentlessly to its close.

We then make a large step forward in musical history to Edward Elgar’s Elegy. This music speaks an intense language, containing very dense string composition with more dissonance than the norm. Elgar’s Serenade is closer to Mozart, an early work of graceful elegance. Elgar, himself a violinist, was sensitive to the coloration of the string orchestra and described his work as being "real stringy".

The Capriol Suite is the most famous work of Peter Warlock. Composed in 1925, it is based on melodies found in a manual of Renaissance dances. The Capriol Suite is a set of six dances, the last one being an exhilarating sword dance, danced by four men in mock combat. The music marches forward throughout, climaxing in violent dissonances sending the piece hurtling to a close. Just the right opener to our farewell evening after a hopefully successful concert on 26th May 2018!

On this Symphonic Holiday, the final concert will be in support of the Balanyá Youth Orchestra / Guatemala. Read more...

PROKOFIEV, Overture on Hebrew Themes
PROKOFIEV, Violin Concerto No. 2
BEETHOVEN, Symphony No.1

EXCITING MUSIC from Sergei Prokofiev and a classical Ludwig van Beethoven are on the programme for your summer vacation in Bardou. The Overture on Hebrew Themes opens the programme – an orchestrated version by Prokofiev himself –, is lively and rhythmic and resonates images of Jewish folk music and the Middle East. Our soloist Lisa Rieder who recently had a successful concert tour with the United Nations Orchestra of Geneva will then play with us Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 2. This music is rich with lyrical long arching melodies, but also memorable for its furious, grotesque-satiric passages – the final flurry is marked tumultuoso.

After such excitement one could imagine mistakenly Beethoven’s Symphony No.1 would be a chance to catch one’s breath. It is true that this first symphony written by the young composer is a classical one, strongly anchored in the coordinates of Viennese musical life of those days. However this a Beethoven symphony to explore and our aim will be to achieve a deep understanding of this music in the course of our stay in Bardou; culminating in a passionate and pulsating vibrant performance. It was Robert Schumann who wrote in his reflections triggered by the listening of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony: “Do not seek to extract the unusual, go back to the roots of creation, demonstrate his genius not through his last symphony (…), you can do this just as well through his first symphony.”

Registration is still possible for violins, violas, 1 cello, 1 double bass, 1 flute, 1 oboe, 1 horn, 2 trumpets
