Bardou

Bardou lies in the Parc Naturel du Haut Languedoc in the mountains near Montpellier in Southern France and is our special destination for those who appreciate the essentials of life. The accommodation is rustic but you will be rewarded with a unique setting of stunning scenery and tranquility. Consisting of twenty ancient stone houses, Bardou is an authentic example of the architecture and layout of a tiny medieval mountain hamlet.

Bardou is the perfect place for enjoying nature. Several marked trails offer short- or long-distance walks for all levels. You might also enjoy swimming in the refreshing waters of mountain streams with waterfalls and secluded deep rock pools.

ELGAR, Introduction and Allegro for Strings
BRITTEN, Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge
DVOŘÁK, Serenade for Strings

CONDUCTOR DAVID CURTIS who lives in Stratford-upon-Avon, the idyllic birthplace of Shakespeare, on this Symphonic Holiday, as well as preparing with us Dvořák’s popular Serenade for Strings will introduce the players to two masterpieces of English music. He describes in his own words the choice for this ambitious programme for keen amateur players:

“Elgar the symphonist composed this magnificent work for string orchestra and solo string quartet. From the opening bars we hear Elgar striding across his beloved Malvern Hills and if you’re interested in a recording this CD with me conducting the Orchestra of the Swan includes the Elgar Serenade for Strings.

This affectionate portrait of Britten’s teacher Frank Bridge is one of the defining pieces of 20th century string repertoire, challenging but immensely rewarding. Commissioned by the Salzburg Festival in 1937 for the Boyd Neel Orchestra I was fortunate enough to study with the then leader of the orchestra, the virtuoso Canadian violinist Frederick Grinke. I hope his insights helped my own performances.

Dvořák’s Serenade for Strings is one of his sunniest compositions, a delight to rehearse and perform from start to finish and, like the Britten, was composed in less than 2 weeks. With the concluding bars returning to the opening material of this delightful work the ending is as warm and welcoming as dusk on a long summer evening.”

Symphony Orchestra
11th - 21st July 2020

Conductor: Frédéric Tschumi
Violin: Eunsley Park

BEETHOVEN, Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus
MENDELSSOHN, Violin Concerto
SCHUBERT, Symphony No. 4 "Tragic"

Schubert gave his Fourth Symphony the subtitle, 'Tragic', yet while we can hear moments of haunting melancholy and even anguish, especially in the introduction, overall, there is as much bubbly, youthful vitality in the music, as calamity. Only 19 when he completed this work in April 1816, Schubert never heard it performed in public in his lifetime as it didn’t receive its premiere until 1849, more than two decades after his composer’s death. Even then, it was performed by an amateur orchestra that had grown out of a family string quartet.

It was about the same time that the Violin Concerto in E Minor by Felix Mendelssohn received its premiere in Leipzig. Hailed as one of the most lyrical and flowing works of the nineteenth century, this is a prime example of a work that while adhering to the Classical style of Beethoven, also pointed the way to the Romantic ethos of Brahms. Evidence from Mendelssohn’s correspondence suggests that he connected the movements into an uninterrupted span of music because he, as a performer, found applause between movements to be distracting. It is in fact, in part because of Mendelssohn, that the modern tradition of holding applause until the end of a work came to be standard practice. On our Symphonic Holiday however, we will happily accept the applause of our enthusiastic audiences in the churches at any point during the two final concerts in the churches of Villemagne and Saint-Chinian!

We will open our programme with Beethoven’s Prometheus ouverture. This allegorical ballet is based on the myth of Prometheus. Prometheus is depicted as a lofty spirit who, finding the human beings of his time in a state of ignorance, refined them through art and knowledge and gave them laws of right conduct. Prometheus takes them to Parnassus, to receive instruction from Apollo, god of the arts, who commands Amphion, Arion, and Orpheus to teach them music.
