Collioure

Collioure is a vibrant town on the French Mediterranean coast, not far from Spain, where the Pyrenees dive into the Mediterranean Sea. With its two beaches, Collioure is beautifully situated around a bay. More inland, the mountain slopes are covered with vineyards. The old town of Collioure is dominated by an impressive ancient fortress, which today a museum telling the rich history of the region.

Emblematic for Collioure are its colourful houses. Bright colours characterise also the paintings of those artists who followed the ideas of Fauvism. Matisse, a leader of this movement, made Collioure a centre of his life, inspired by the light of this town by the sea. Many artists followed him, making Collioure a hub for painters. Their artworks are today exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art.
